The Department of Physical Chemistry was founded in February 1958. After more than 60 years of growth and development, the Department of Physical Chemistry has a rich history in contributing to chemical science and keep its long tradition of excellence in teaching, training, and scientific research.

Currently the Department of Physical Chemistry has a total of 12 active faculty members, 2 staffs. Of these, 13 have doctorate degree and 1 has master degree. Faculty members with doctorate degrees were trained in the Netherlands, France, Japan, Austria, the US, and Vietnam. The Department serves the physical chemistry majors and has an extensive teaching service in the undergraduate program of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemical Engineering, etc. In addition, the Department also offer courses for graduate students in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering as well as PhD students majoring in Theoretical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry

The Department of Physical Chemistry has been collaborated across sectors with research institutions in Vietnam and across the world. In Vietnam, the Department has a strong partnership with the other two Department of Physical Chemistry of the Hanoi National University of Education and the Vietnam National University in Hanoi. In addition, the department has built connections with the Institute of Tropical Technology and the Institute of Chemistry under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH), Center for Environmental Technology and Sustainable Development (CETASD) – VNU University of Sciences. The Department also collaborates with international universities, such as Nagaoka University (Japan), Kyoto University (Japan), University of Paris 7 and Paris 11 (France), Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia..., NCTU (Taiwan). Annually, active faculty members published numerous articles in prominent national and indexed international journals (ISI and SCOPUS) and have many reports at specified conferences such as Conferences of catalysis and adsorption, AWPP conference, ASAM conference, Analytica conferences...

Presently, the Department of Physical Chemistry had ability to tap the full breadth of funding agencies such as 06 Nafosted Projects (04 projects have been accepted, 02 projects are on progress), 03 ministerial projects (accepted), and many other projects are being carried out as well as other HUST-sponsored projects.
